Country profile 

Russia is the largest country in the world. The total land area of Russia is 17,075,400 sq. km. The population is 141.9 million people. Russia is a multinational, multi-ethnic state with over 180 nationalities. Russians form the largest ethnic group, accounting for more than 80% of the population. 

The official language in the Russian Federation is Russian, but a large number of other languages and dialects exist. 

Orthodox Christianity is the dominant religion. Islamic, Catholic, Buddhist and other confessions are also presented. 

Administrative subdivisions of the Russian Federation include 46 regions, 21 republics, 9 territories, and 7 others. 

At the present time Russia is the world’s largest producer and exporter of natural gas and the world’s second largest producer and exporter of oil.
